Bach on Breakwater Cafe... situated at the end of the Coastal Walkway, right on the waterfront at the Lee Breakwater in Taranaki’s Port area. It overlooks a child-friendly little beach, and the working shipping harbour. The Bach is warm and casual, with a comfortable and welcoming ambience generated by the purple interior, the use of many upcycled materials and the mix of very old wharf timbers. With cosy banquette seating behind the fireplace, and slab timber tables lining the extensive double-glazed windows, the atmosphere is vibrant and friendly and fun, with terrific sea views.

Diners can enjoy breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner and snacks in between, choosing either from the delicious array of cabinet food, or the extensive and well thought out menus which includes outstanding gluten free, vegetarian and vegan offerings, as well as the normal meatatarian choices. You can be on a diet and still enjoy yourself here.

The Bach on Breakwater is THE place to be for weekend brunches, so arrive early if you want a particular seat, as they don’t take daytime reservations. With comfortable seating for around 150 guests, the tables are turning all the time as it’s an unrivalled place to dine – or to simply relax with a glass of wine or a beer.

Our  3 x ‘party room’ areas are available for private groups of up to 20 guests for your small functions, and they’re also available for weddings and other full restaurant function hire opportunities.

  • The Bach is a must visit when in New Plymouth. The food is delicious, delectable and downright fantastic, catering to all needs; the service is friendly and warm; the atmosphere is superb, especially at high tide on a grey and windy day. I love the colour schemes, the pinnies, the coffee, the Bach! The worst thing about the Bach is deciding what to have - everything looks so good. A great way to spend relaxing time with friends over a good meal or just to sit and soak up the surrounds with coffee and cake. Thank you so much. I'll be back
